Toronto is a sports-loving city, and there’s no doubt that our city has seen some of the world’s best athletes play in their stadiums. To prove it, check out some of the top athletes in Toronto Sports History that have made a mark in our city.
How can any of us forget that winning walk-off home run that Joe Carter hit to win the 1993 World Series? As the face of the Toronto Blue Jay’s glory years in the early 90’s, Carter lead the Jays to win the division and hit the single that clinched the AL East championship in 1991. Then in ’92, he helped the Jays win their first World Series championship – the first ever for Canada. He was one of the best in baseball that our city has ever seen, and will be remembered forever here in Toronto.
Reminding us of those epic Joe Carter years nearly 20 years later is Jose Bautista. Jose drove Toronto to playoffs with his strong swing, and excellent outfield plays. And in 2014, Jose joined only 4 other players in history to hit more than 200 home runs in their careers. His talent helped drive Toronto to clinch a playoff berth and win the American League Division Series in 2015 – the first since ‘93. He’s now best known for his legendary bat flip that hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning, pushing Toronto ahead of the Rangers in the do-or-die game 5, and earning him the nickname “Joey Bats.” He’s arguably one of the best players we have seen in Toronto baseball since Carter.
Hands down the greatest Raptor of all time is still Vince Carter. He single-handedly put the Toronto Raptors on the map with his iconic slam dunk contest performance that stood up to the likes of Michael Jordan and is still one the best feats of all time. With his quick hands and ability to pass through any blockers in his way, he led the Toronto Raptors to their first three playoff appearances in the franchise and became an obvious fan favourite. With numerous awards and eight-time NBA All-star awards, it’s hard to contest that Vince is one of the top athletes in Toronto sports history to date.
Michael “Pinball” Clemons
When it comes to Argonaut football, there’s no denying that Pinball Clemons remains an icon to this day. One of the best running backs the CFL has ever seen, he put the Argo’s on the map and led the team to three Grey Cups in the 90’s. A small but mighty force, beaming smile, and incredible ability to dodge and jump defenseman, he won the hearts of not only Toronto fans but players and other football enthusiasts as well. His plays brought life to the Toronto franchise and the entire CFL, earning him a well-deserved spot on this list.
Not everyone knows that the famous coffee and donut brand was created by the Hall of Fame Toronto Maple Leafs player Tim Horton. Already a familiar name in Canada, Tim was one of the best defensemen Toronto had ever seen. Beginning his rookie season with the Maple Leafs in 1952, he would become one of the greatest players to hit Toronto ice for 17 years. With an amazing hockey history, he lead the Leafs to 4 Stanley cups in the 60’s and also played on the All-Star Team six times while in Toronto.
